The Power of Doing- Part One

Like the fall of a single domino, one action initiated will lead to another, then another, then another. They will all fall, though the direction and the destination are different. A sequence of righteous actions sincerely performed for the sake of Allaah and upon the Sunnah, will be a reason for Tawfeeq (success) from Allaah and it will lead to more righteous deeds; the direction is that of obedience and the destination is Paradise and the Pleasure of Allaah.

And Allaah increases those who were guided, in guidance. [Surah Maryam (19): 76]

It is not enough to say that you believe and then refrain from the actions that necessitate this belief. The Scholars have defined Eemaan- Belief as:

The belief of the heart, the utterance of the tongue, and the action of the limbs; it (eemaan) increases with obedience and decreases with disobedience.

Allaah, the Sublime, has mentioned beside belief, righteous deeds an innumerous amount of times, though it will suffice to mention from one surah showing the reward for those that have pure belief and righteous actions:

{Verily, those who believe [in the Oneness of Allah, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) including all obligations ordered by Islam] and do righteous good deeds, they are the best of creatures.

Their reward with Allah will be gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them and they with Him. That is for whoever has feared his Lord. [Surat Al-Bayyinah 98:7-8]

A sequence of evil actions performed for the gratification of one’s own self and for the increase of nothing but transgression is a means for destruction. The direction is that of disobedience and the destination is the Fire and the Anger of Allaah. {We Seek refuge from Allaah}

The Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“There is none amongst you but has been assigned a place (either) in Paradise and (or) in the Hell-Fire.” The people said (to him), “Should we not depend upon it?” He said: carry on doing (good) deeds, for everybody will find easy such deeds as will lead him to his destined place. He then recited: “As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah..” (92.5) [Saheeh Al-Bukhari: 6217]

We know well enough our own selves and the deeds that we perform; whether they are in the direction of obedience or disobedience, and we know whether or not we are being facilitated towards that. If we were to remember the Hadith Qudsi which makes it clear how poor and in need we are of Allaah, in every aspect from the guidance that He gives to the food and clothing He provides us with, we would strive more in the path of guidance. We would beg for guidance like we would beg to be saved from a burning building.

Allaah said:

O My servants! I have forbidden dhulm (oppression) for Myself, and I have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except those whom I have guided, so seek guidance from Me and I shall guide you. O My servants, all of you are hungry except those whom I have fed, so seek food from Me and I shall feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except those whom I have clothed, so seek clothing from Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants, you commit sins by day and by night, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness from Me and I shall forgive you. O My servants, you can neither do Me any harm nor can you do Me any good. . O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all as pious as the most pious heart of any individual amongst you, then this would not increase My Kingdom an iota. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all as wicked as the most wicked heart of any individual amongst you, then this would not decrease My Kingdom an iota. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all to stand together in one place and ask of Me, and I were to give everyone what he requested, then that would not decrease what I Possess, except what is decreased of the ocean when a needle is dipped into it. O My servants, it is but your deeds that I account for you, and then recompense you for. So he who finds good, let him praise Allah, and he who finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself. [Saheeh Muslim: 2577]

{I originally planned on writing this as one post but as it has gotten long I will be posting in two parts inshaAllaah. Part two will, by the permission of Allaah be up on the blog in a weeks time.}

The Family: The Woman

The Successful Woman

You are the backbone of every society. If you are righteous more than half of the society is righteous.  You are strong yet gentle. Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed and your efforts will be rewarded. You are the first teacher of the next generation, if your teaching is fair, truthful and just, the entire society that will succeed you will be so. You do not let your mind get distracted by this world of illusions and play. The hereafter is always your priority and you give it preference over this world whose worth is less than that of the wing of a mosquito.

You advise your sister with wisdom when you see her committing sins, and you persist with patience and forbearance. You are a righteous wife and you do not let the harm of others deter you from your goal and you remember the saying of the Noble Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم) that:

“Paradise is nearer to any of you than the Shirak (leather strap) of his shoe, and so is the (Hell) Fire.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

You spend in charity in awe, love and hope of your Lord. You remember the revelation uttered by the most truthful of mankind (صلى الله عليه و سلم):

“I looked at Paradise and found poor people forming the majority of its inhabitants; and I looked at Hell and saw that the majority of its inhabitants were women.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

You are determined to be of the women of Paradise and you strive with the necessary deeds and intention to obtain it. You have a good opinion of Allaah and you strive to be of the women that the Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said:

“If a woman prays her five (daily prayers), fasts her month (Ramadan), guards her chastity and obeys her husband, it will be said to her: Enter Paradise through whichever of the gates of Paradise you wish.” [Saheeh al-Jaami’- Graded Saheeh by Al-Albani]

You are successful and you will inherit Gardens within which your every desire will be met and you will not fear nor grieve, as The Lord, Almighty said:

“Truly those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and give Zakat, they will have their reward with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” [Surat Al-Baqarah: 277]
And:
“This is the Paradise which you have been made to inherit because of your deeds which you used to do (in the life of the world).” [Surat Az-Zukhruf: 72]

The Unsuccessful Woman

You are the destruction of the society. You are abrupt, irrational and selfish. If the situation complies with your desires you are happy and if it doesn’t depression, anger and hatred reign over your heart. You are a hindrance to good and a catalyst for evil. You are misguided and you misguide others under the pretence of intelligence.

You abandon the rights of your family by not educating them in that which is good, rather you facilitate their desires like you wish yours were facilitated and you lead them to more harm than they can bear. You disregard your children and let the TV, internet and the most evil of mankind raise them for you. You think they will love you for succumbing to their desires, but devastation is all that lays in wait.

You are a trial for those around you and men are not safe from the likes of you. The Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said:

“After me I have not left any affliction more harmful to men than women.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

You deceive others to “get ahead” when in reality, you deceive only yourself. On the surface you appear a delicate flower but the closer one gets, the more harm he will incur from your thorns. You have fallen in the black hole of materialism and goodness and piety are light years away. If goodness enters your mind, it is a rarity and you only follow it if there is alongside it a fulfilment of your desires.

You have lost the honour and respect that the Successful Woman has by degrading yourself to a tool of men. They use you for your “beauty” and throw you away when it fades. You think you are empowered but you have enslaved yourself to the wants of the opposite sex. You look down on the women of dignity, confusing envy for them with pity. In reality you are the one to be pitied and they are to be envied. The successful woman wishes to help you but you turn away wishing to turn her away with you.

You imitate men in order to feel importance but you are cursed as you do so. You leave the high status endowed to women to degrade yourself in seeking other than it. You have seen the truth but disregarded it, in exchange for an hour of play in this world. You are lost and only by the Mercy of Allaah will you become of the guided and successful. Allaah is Just and if there is goodness in you, you will be from the successful, but Allaah does not guide those who do not deserve it:

“How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and after they bore witness that the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) is true and after clear proofs had come unto them? And Allah guides not the people who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers).” [Surat Al-Imran: 86]

May Allaah guide us to be from the Successful Ones and protect us from the evil plots of Shaytaan and from the evils of our own selves. May peace and salutations be upon the Noble Prophet Muhammad, his family, his companions and all those that follow them in goodness.

The ten days of Dhul Hijjah

It has been a very long time since my last post but I had to post, since we are upon the ten blessed days of Dhul Hijjah.

image

Most people are busy during these days preparing for Eid; time is spent buying new clothes, jewellery, baking sweets, arranging invites and sorting meal ideas that we forget how blessed an opportunity we are passing by. These days contain an abundant amount of good and therein Allaah has placed opportunities to reap rewards that cannot be obtained in other days.

We have an opportunity to repent. We have an opportunity to purify our hearts from the filth that we expose it to daily. We all sin and as the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Every son of Adam commits sin, and the best of those who commit sin are those who repent.’” (Sunan Ibn Maajah: Hadith Hasan). Were we to let a chance like this go by without seizing it, we risk falling deeper. The problem with sin is that the more you indulge, the more blinded your perception of right and wrong is, and then you sin more and it’s an entire vicious cycle of disobedience and darkness. Ibn al Qayyim said so poignantly:

Let us take these days to perform righteous deeds and repent for our wrong. May Allaah ease the condition of the Muslims, forgive us and send His Salaah and salaam on the final Messenger.

(I planned on writing a longer post, but alas a little girl that Allaah blessed me with is proving to be quite the distraction, so forgive me)

Drawing Connections

In Surat Al Fatihah, Allaah begins with His Perfect praise of Himself; He mentions His Lordship, His Mercy, His Sovereignty, His Noble attributes that direct the slave to the worship of Him and following this is the request of the servant to His Lord:

“Guide us to the straight path” [1:5]

We ask Allaah to guide us to the straight path, the path of guidance and light. This is a great request of the servant as it [guidance] is the greatest source of happiness which entails happiness in this Dunya and in the Hereafter. Are we left wondering about this path? No! Rather, The Lord, The Most High begins the next Surah with:

“Alif, Laam, Meem,

This is the Book (the Quran), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqun*” [2:1-2]

As though this is the response to what the straight path is; it is this book that you hold in your hands. This is the guidance to the straight path that you request; the straight path that Allaah has favoured for His pious slaves, it is the “The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace , not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger (such as the Jews), nor of those who went astray (such as the Christians).”

It is in this Book that you will find your way, the way that will separate you from those who earned the Anger of Allaah and those who went astray. It is the way of the Muttaqoon, those who:

“…believe in the Ghaib and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and spend out of what we have provided for them.

And who believe in (the Quran and the Sunnah) which has been sent down (revealed) to you (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم ) and in [the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), etc.] which were sent down before you and they believe with certainty in the Hereafter. (Resurrection, recompense of their good and bad deeds, Paradise and Hell, etc.).

They are on (true) guidance from their Lord, and they are the successful.” [2:3-5]

It is the path of the successful and it is the guidance that is requested so hold tight to it and stay firm upon it. It is reported that one of the righteous Salaf said:

“If you want to know your position with Allaah, then look at your position with His Book”

This is the reality of the affair. When the servant holds tight to the Book of Guidance that Allaah sent down then His position with Allaah is raised as the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“Verily, Allah elevates some people with this Qur’an and abases others.”[Saheeh Muslim]

May Allaah raise us via His Book and make it a proof for us and not against us on the Day of Resurrection. والحمد لله و صلى الله وسلم على رسول الله

*[The pious and righteous persons who fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)].

These are my notes on a recorded lecture by Sheikh Attiyyah Saalim رحمه الله. The lecture is a Tafsir of Surat Al Hujurat. There is a science in tafsir which finds the connections between the end of one Surah and the beginning of the next and the Sheikh gave the example between Al Fatihah and Al Baqarah before proceeding to the connections between Al Fath and Hujuraat. I ask Allaah that He grants me the Tawfeeq to translate some more of the benefits of this lecture in the future as there are many.

The Signs of Allaah

بسم الله

An ayah linguistically is a sign or symbol. In regards to the signs of Allaah then they are of three types:

1) Aayaat Munazzalah

2) Aayaat Ufuqiyyah

3) Aayaat Nafsiyyah

The first, Aayaat Munazzalah, are the signs of Allaah that were revealed to the Messengers. They are what Allaah revealed to the Messengers and commanded that they convey to the people, such as the Qur’an, the Tawraat, the Injeel (Gospels of Jesus) and the scribes of Ibraheem. These Aayaat are UNCREATED as they are the speech of Allaah, The Most High.

The second type, Aayaat Ufuqiyyaah, are the visible signs present in the universe that attest to the presence of Allaah and His great ability and might. Examples of these Aayaat are the sun, moon, stars, heavens and earth as Allaah says:

“And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Prostrate not to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate to Allah Who created them, if you (really) worship Him.” [41:37]

“Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding.” [3:190]

The third type, Aayaat Nafsiyyah are the innate signs. The signs present within one’s self that attest to Allaah’s amazing ability. He سبحانه وتعالى said:

“And also in your ownselves. Will you not then see?” [51:20]

“We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their ownselves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Quran) is the truth. Is it not sufficient in regard to your Lord that He is a Witness over all things?” [41:53]

The second and third type are created signs that one perceives in the universe and in the self that confirm the presence and ability of Allaah. The first type is in uncreated and confirm the fact that Allaah sends guidance for the slaves, through revelation to Messengers, in order that they worship Him, alone, in a manner that He legislated. The slave may perceive the signs in himself and in his surroundings and come to the realisation of the Almighty, but he will not find salvation unless he follows the guidance and revelation sent by Allaah.

والحمد لله و صلى الله وسلم على رسول الله
