The Power of Doing- Part two

“…O My servants, it is but your deeds that I account for you, and then recompense you for. So he who finds good, let him praise Allah, and he who finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself.”

We know then that our deeds are a reason for a good end or a bad end. They are the reason for our receiving mercy and entrance to Gardens of Bliss, or they are a reason for torment. The responsibility to act is on us, yet we are not and never will we be able to perform enough deeds to “deserve” entrance in to Paradise. It is but a mercy from Allaah as His Messenger صلى الله عليه و سلم said in the narration by Abu Huraira:

I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, “The good deeds of any person will not make him enter Paradise.” (i.e., None can enter Paradise through his good deeds.) They (the Prophet’s companions) said, ‘Not even you, O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)?’ He said, “Not even myself, unless Allah bestows His favour and mercy on me.” So be moderate in your religious deeds and do the deeds that are within your ability: and none of you should wish for death, for if he is a good doer, he may increase his good deeds, and if he is an evil doer, he may repent to Allah.” {Saheeh Al-Bukhari: 5673}

It is clear from both hadeeth therefore that it is upon us to ask for guidance and strive in worship but it is Allaah that guides and facilitates us to perform deeds of righteousness:

O My servants, all of you are astray except those whom I have guided, so seek guidance from Me and I shall guide you.

We can not fathom the mercy of Allaah upon His slaves. He is more merciful to us than our mothers; He admits to Paradise those who fulfill His Covenant though He is Free of need. Were He to wish that every one of us went to the Fire then it would not be an injustice as He is the Creator. He recompenses based on our deeds, whether good or bad therefore it is upon us to act:

“So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it.

And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it.” {Surat Az-Zalzalah 99:7-8}

These actions, whether large or small, must be in accordance to the Shariah, based on the Qur’an and the Sunnah and they must be for the sake of Allaah alone. It is not enough that an action has a good intention, seeking the pleasure of Allaah and His reward, but it is an innovation that neither the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم did, nor his companions, nor the righteous predecessors. The one that commits such an act is making the claim that either he is more knowledgeable about a deed which gets one closer to Allaah than the Messenger صلى الله عليه و سلم or that there is an action which the Messenger صلى الله عليه سلم concealed and only the “special Awliya” are aware of these acts. Both premises are dismissed as ignorance as the Messenger صلى الله عليه و سلم said:

“If anyone introduces in our matter something which does not belong to it, will be rejected”. {Agreed Upon}

And he صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“I am leaving you upon a (path of) brightness whose night is like its day. No one will deviate from it after I am gone but one who is doomed. Whoever among you lives will see great conflict. I urge you to adhere to what you know of my Sunnah and the path of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs, and cling stubbornly to it. And you must obey, even if (your leader is) an Abyssinian leader. For the true believer is like a camel with a ring in its nose; wherever it is driven, it complies.” {Sunan Ibn Maajah: Book 1 H:45}

There is, therefore, only one way of action that will lead to Paradise and that is the way of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم. Any action that does not comply with his Sunnah is rejected. In the same way, if an act is from the Sunnah but it is dedicated to other than Allaah, or used to seek nearness to other than Allaah then it is rejected. The act may be small but the Noble Angels are recording. The All-Mighty is Ever-Watching and All-Knowing. He knows the actions of the limbs and the actions of the heart. The power of doing an action, is that be it small or large, difficult or easy, it will all add up on the scales. Mountains, after all, are made up of small stones.

We can not expect to follow our desires at every turn and neglect the obligations of Allaah upon us and expect that we will not be recompensed accordingly. It is as Ibn-ul Qayyim رحمه الله said:

“The intelligent person perceives forbidden things like a delicious food, which contain fatal poison. Whenever its pleasure arouses his interest, the reality of the poison would push him away from it. Also, he perceives the orders of Allaah as bitter medicine that leads to good health and recovery.” {Al-Fawaa’id (pg. 232 eng. trans)}

Let us not be deceived by the adornments of this worldly life. Let our actions reflect those of the righteous in order that we receive Mercy from The Merciful. We must remember that:

“The Paradise is surrounded by hardships and the Hell-Fire is surrounded by temptations.” {Saheeh Muslim: 2822}

We must remember that both are closer than we anticipate as the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

 “Jannah is nearer to anyone of you than your shoe-lace, and so is the (Hell) Fire”. {Saheeh Al-Bukhari: 6488}

May Allaah make our deeds those of righteousness, our hearts the hearts of the Muttaqeen and may He facilitate us towards evil and protect us from evil. May His Salaah and Salaam be upon the Final Messenger, his family, his companions and all those that follow them in goodness until the Day of Resurrection.



The Power of Doing- Part One

Like the fall of a single domino, one action initiated will lead to another, then another, then another. They will all fall, though the direction and the destination are different. A sequence of righteous actions sincerely performed for the sake of Allaah and upon the Sunnah, will be a reason for Tawfeeq (success) from Allaah and it will lead to more righteous deeds; the direction is that of obedience and the destination is Paradise and the Pleasure of Allaah.

And Allaah increases those who were guided, in guidance. [Surah Maryam (19): 76]

It is not enough to say that you believe and then refrain from the actions that necessitate this belief. The Scholars have defined Eemaan- Belief as:

The belief of the heart, the utterance of the tongue, and the action of the limbs; it (eemaan) increases with obedience and decreases with disobedience.

Allaah, the Sublime, has mentioned beside belief, righteous deeds an innumerous amount of times, though it will suffice to mention from one surah showing the reward for those that have pure belief and righteous actions:

 {Verily, those who believe [in the Oneness of Allah, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) including all obligations ordered by Islam] and do righteous good deeds, they are the best of creatures.

Their reward with Allah will be gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them and they with Him. That is for whoever has feared his Lord. [Surat Al-Bayyinah 98:7-8]

A sequence of evil actions performed for the gratification of one’s own self and for the increase of nothing but transgression is a means for destruction. The direction is that of disobedience and the destination is the Fire and the Anger of Allaah. {We Seek refuge from Allaah}

The Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“There is none amongst you but has been assigned a place (either) in Paradise and (or) in the Hell-Fire.” The people said (to him), “Should we not depend upon it?” He said: carry on doing (good) deeds, for everybody will find easy such deeds as will lead him to his destined place. He then recited: “As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah..” (92.5) [Saheeh Al-Bukhari: 6217]

We know well enough our own selves and the deeds that we perform; whether they are in the direction of obedience or disobedience, and we know whether or not we are being facilitated towards that. If we were to remember the Hadith Qudsi which makes it clear how poor and in need we are of Allaah, in every aspect from the guidance that He gives to the food and clothing He provides us with, we would strive more in the path of guidance. We would beg for guidance like we would beg to be saved from a burning building.

Allaah said:

O My servants! I have forbidden dhulm (oppression) for Myself, and I have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except those whom I have guided, so seek guidance from Me and I shall guide you. O My servants, all of you are hungry except those whom I have fed, so seek food from Me and I shall feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except those whom I have clothed, so seek clothing from Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants, you commit sins by day and by night, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness from Me and I shall forgive you. O My servants, you can neither do Me any harm nor can you do Me any good. . O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all as pious as the most pious heart of any individual amongst you, then this would not increase My Kingdom an iota. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all as wicked as the most wicked heart of any individual amongst you, then this would not decrease My Kingdom an iota. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all to stand together in one place and ask of Me, and I were to give everyone what he requested, then that would not decrease what I Possess, except what is decreased of the ocean when a needle is dipped into it. O My servants, it is but your deeds that I account for you, and then recompense you for. So he who finds good, let him praise Allah, and he who finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself. [Saheeh Muslim: 2577]

The Family: The Woman

The Successful Woman

You are the backbone of every society. If you are righteous more than half of the society is righteous.  You are strong yet gentle. Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed and your efforts will be rewarded. You are the first teacher of the next generation, if your teaching is fair, truthful and just, the entire society that will succeed you will be so. You do not let your mind get distracted by this world of illusions and play. The hereafter is always your priority and you give it preference over this world whose worth is less than that of the wing of a mosquito.

You advise your sister with wisdom when you see her committing sins, and you persist with patience and forbearance. You are a righteous wife and you do not let the harm of others deter you from your goal and you remember the saying of the Noble Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم) that:

“Paradise is nearer to any of you than the Shirak (leather strap) of his shoe, and so is the (Hell) Fire.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

You spend in charity in awe, love and hope of your Lord. You remember the revelation uttered by the most truthful of mankind (صلى الله عليه و سلم):

“I looked at Paradise and found poor people forming the majority of its inhabitants; and I looked at Hell and saw that the majority of its inhabitants were women.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

You are determined to be of the women of Paradise and you strive with the necessary deeds and intention to obtain it. You have a good opinion of Allaah and you strive to be of the women that the Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said:

“If a woman prays her five (daily prayers), fasts her month (Ramadan), guards her chastity and obeys her husband, it will be said to her: Enter Paradise through whichever of the gates of Paradise you wish.” [Saheeh al-Jaami’- Graded Saheeh by Al-Albani]

You are successful and you will inherit Gardens within which your every desire will be met and you will not fear nor grieve, as The Lord, Almighty said:

“Truly those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and give Zakat, they will have their reward with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” [Surat Al-Baqarah: 277]
“This is the Paradise which you have been made to inherit because of your deeds which you used to do (in the life of the world).” [Surat Az-Zukhruf: 72]

The Unsuccessful Woman

You are the destruction of the society. You are abrupt, irrational and selfish. If the situation complies with your desires you are happy and if it doesn’t depression, anger and hatred reign over your heart. You are a hindrance to good and a catalyst for evil. You are misguided and you misguide others under the pretence of intelligence.

You abandon the rights of your family by not educating them in that which is good, rather you facilitate their desires like you wish yours were facilitated and you lead them to more harm than they can bear. You disregard your children and let the TV, internet and the most evil of mankind raise them for you. You think they will love you for succumbing to their desires, but devastation is all that lays in wait.

You are a trial for those around you and men are not safe from the likes of you. The Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said:

“After me I have not left any affliction more harmful to men than women.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

You deceive others to “get ahead” when in reality, you deceive only yourself. On the surface you appear a delicate flower but the closer one gets, the more harm he will incur from your thorns. You have fallen in the black hole of materialism and goodness and piety are light years away. If goodness enters your mind, it is a rarity and you only follow it if there is alongside it a fulfilment of your desires.

You have lost the honour and respect that the Successful Woman has by degrading yourself to a tool of men. They use you for your “beauty” and throw you away when it fades. You think you are empowered but you have enslaved yourself to the wants of the opposite sex. You look down on the women of dignity, confusing envy for them with pity. In reality you are the one to be pitied and they are to be envied. The successful woman wishes to help you but you turn away wishing to turn her away with you.

You imitate men in order to feel importance but you are cursed as you do so. You leave the high status endowed to women to degrade yourself in seeking other than it. You have seen the truth but disregarded it, in exchange for an hour of play in this world. You are lost and only by the Mercy of Allaah will you become of the guided and successful. Allaah is Just and if there is goodness in you, you will be from the successful, but Allaah does not guide those who do not deserve it:

“How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and after they bore witness that the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) is true and after clear proofs had come unto them? And Allah guides not the people who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers).” [Surat Al-Imran: 86]

May Allaah guide us to be from the Successful Ones and protect us from the evil plots of Shaytaan and from the evils of our own selves. May peace and salutations be upon the Noble Prophet Muhammad, his family, his companions and all those that follow them in goodness.

The End of Ramadhan…

… So to that I say تقبل الله منا ومنكم -May Allaah accept from us and from you.

While most Muslims world over are joyous over tomorrow’s Eid, here I sit, writing, with eyes swollen from tears. I didn’t get to fast this Ramadhan for medical reasons and I feel like I missed out so much this Blessed Month. I tried to stay busy with reading Qur’an and praying night prayers but still, I feel like… well, sad is all I can say.

I haven’t written in a long time despite needing to. I need to because this tiny blog of mine is a way for me to channel my need for study and research. I research the beautiful aspects of Islam so I can keep reminders here, primarily for me, and then for anyone reading to benefit. But the problem is that I haven’t taken the time to do that recently. Instead I busied myself, mainly just being a wife and mother and the never ending cycle of cooking/cleaning that this job entails, and I forgot myself. Now I find myself in darkness. My heart feels heavy and to be perfectly honest, dead. Knowledge is light and I used to be the girl that would study Islam from the very moment I woke up to when I went to sleep. It went to the way side as excepted when you get married and have children but just in the past few months have I noticed how much I need to return. Of course, there is no complete return when you’re a Mum but before Ramadhan, I would wake up at Fajr and study Arabic before everyone woke up and I was just a little content with the fact that I got a little quiet time, a little “me time” to study. I took it for granted and now I’m in a place I thought I would never return to.

When I first found Islam, in the truest sense of the word i.e the way of the Salaf, I was a new person. The old me struggled with depression and when I found Salafeyyah, I got through that without even realising it. Of course with any mental illness there were times I would go back to the destructive thought cycles but nothing, until recently, saw me at a point where I couldn’t dig myself out. Well, here I am, trying to crawl my way out of this black hole. Here I am, confessing my depression, and saying that, by the permission of Allaah, I will come out of it again. Because:

“Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned” {2:286}

I pray that this hardship is an expiation for my many sins and I pray that the deeds I did during this Ramadhan are accepted by Allaah. I ask Allaah, by His Mercy, which encompasses everything, that He forgives me and allows me to fast next Ramadhan. May the peace and salutations of Allaah be upon the Final Messenger, his family, his companions and all those that follow them in righteousness until the Day of Judgement.
