O Heedless Soul!

What has deluded you O heedless soul? What made you so impatient for inevitable destruction? Did your Lord not swear by time, that indeed mankind was in loss[1] so why do you supplicate for evil like you would supplicate for good?[2] Do you think you’ll be safe from the consequences of your deeds? On the day when man will run away from his son, his daughter, his wife, his mother, his father and brother[3] . The closest to you now in this temporary abode will be your worst enemy on that day when you realise that you took their rights from them. You’ll wish you hadn’t taken that person as a friend[4] .

On that day no soul will care for anything except what it sent forth and what it left behind[5] . So look into yourself and ask; have you sent forth good deeds or did you leave them behind? Did you indulge in sins and send them before you to be accounted for or did you leave them out of shyness of your Lord? What has deluded you O heedless soul, from your Lord, Most Generous[6] . What makes you think that you have the right to free enjoyment of this life without accountability? Did you not already testify when asked by Him ‘Am I not your Lord?’[7] And you know that He is a Gracious, Most Merciful Lord. Is this what you rely on? Do you forget that He is Swift in Account, the Just and Able to exact revenge for your wicked deeds?

Perhaps you do not understand His Lordship. He is Ar-Rabb, the Lord, the Master, the Owner of everyone and everything. Do you ever think of a Master without thinking of a slave? Yet you forget that you are His slave? He owns you and you have no rights of your own. By Allaah, the one who submits as a slave of Ar-Rahman will succeed; the one who humbles himself before the Lord of the Worlds in belief, speech and action. He is Al-Ghaniyy (The Rich), As-Samad (The Self Sufficient Master) and though you are His slave with whom He can do as He wishes, He still gives you everything you have and if you were to count the blessings of Allaah upon you, you would not be able to enumerate them[8] . And what do you do with these blessings except that He gave you sight and you steal forbidden glances, He gave you speech and you lie against His aayaat. He gave you intellect and you use it to deny His existence. Look at how you abuse the mercy of your Master upon you. Know that indeed the hearing, the sight and the heart, all of these you will be questioned about[9]. Know that the punishment is prepared and on that day man will look to what his hands have sent forth and the disbeliever will wish that he were dust[10]. Dust! The thing which if it gets on your expensive clothes, it makes it look filthy and cheap, the thing that you brush off so that you can uphold whatever appearance you give off to the people. Know that a day is coming when your appearance before the people won’t matter, the only thing that will save you on that day in a sound heart[11] and it is said that a heart that does not pump tawheed is a dead heart.

I will tell you this out of mercy, O you who have transgressed against your own self. Accept yourself as slave and accept Allaah as Master, then and only then will you achieve eternal bliss. I will tell you that you do have one right over Allaah that He has communicated through His Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم) when he asked Mu’adh bin Jabal (رضي الله عنه):
“O Mu’adh, do you know the right of Allaah over His bondsmen? He (Mu’adh) said: Allaah and His Apostle know best. He (the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: That Allaah alone should be worshipped and nothing should be associated with Him. He (the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: What right have they (bondsmen) upon Him? He (Mu’adh) said: Allaah and His Apostle know best. He said: That He does not punish them if they do.”[12]
